FAQs About Plastic Surgery

Are you considering having a plastic surgery procedure?  Do you have questions about how long the surgery will take? Or how long will you need to be off work? Answers to these questions and more have been listed below for your reference; however, keep in mind that no two patients are alike, so personal experiences may vary from patient to patient.

WHAT KIND OF TESTING IS REQUIRED BEFORE SURGERY?

Pre-surgical testing may be required depending on the surgery you are having as well as your health and medical history. Dr. Guyuron will discuss with you all pre-surgical test needed during your consultation and his office staff will assist in arranging the test you need.

WHAT MEDICATIONS SHOULD I AVOID BEFORE AND AFTER SURGERY?

Excessive bleeding during or after surgery is a concern, and certain medications can make the blood thinner and increase the loss of blood. Any anti-inflammatory medications, such as aspirin and ibuprofen, should not be taken for 3 weeks before surgery and 1 week post-surgery.

WHERE IS THE SURGERY PERFORMED?

Dr. Guyuron performs his surgeries at the surgery center in Lyndhurst, Ohio (near Beachwood).  The surgery center is fully accredited and state-of-the-art. All surgeries are performed as outpatient surgery. Most procedures are done under general anesthesia.

WHEN WILL I BE ABLE TO GO HOME?

You should expect to spend a half-day in the facility. Most procedures are done under general anesthesia, so you will not be able to drive. We require all surgery patients to be accompanied by a responsible adult who can drive you home.

DURING RECOVERY, HOW MUCH PAIN CAN I EXPECT AND FOR HOW LONG?

Plastic surgery procedures require incisions to be made in the skin and tissue which causes bleeding, bruising, and swelling. A rhinoplasty, mini facelift, and eyelid surgery are all going to have different recovery times and different pain levels.  Less invasive procedures will have less pain that may last for a few days, but with more invasive procedures, pain may continue for a week or two.  If there are any concerns about how you are healing, please call Dr. Guyuron’s office.

WHEN CAN I RETURN TO MY NORMAL ACTIVITIES, SUCH AS EXERCISING AND WORK?

Returning to your normal daily activities after plastic surgery depends on how invasive the surgery was.  With most procedures, returning to normal activities should be within about 3 weeks. However, some procedures require up to 6 weeks for a full recovery, such as a rhinoplasty surgery.

WHEN CAN I EXPECT TO SEE THE RESULTS?

You should see initial results within the first 1-3 weeks after surgery, depending on the procedure. With some procedures, it can take up to 1 year for the results to complete.
