With so many plastic surgeons to choose from, how do you know which one is the best for you? Here are some basic criteria to look for in a plastic surgeon.

ABPS Certification – Verify that the surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). You can do this by visiting the “Public” page at www.abplasticsurgery.org.

ASAPS and ASPS Membership – You want a surgeon who is a member of American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) and American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). Membership in the ASAPS is by invitation only and is limited to ABPS-certified surgeons.

Experience – Board certification requires at least 7 years of experience, but more is always better. With more experience comes better results. Look for a plastic surgeon with at least 15 or 20 years of experience and a good reputation.

Patient Satisfaction – The ability to listen to patients and make them feel comfortable is extremely important and cannot be taught. Find out what patients are saying about the surgeon. Read testimonials and look at before and after photos.

If the certifications, affiliations, experience, and testimonials are all excellent, the personal connection you have with the surgeon may be the deciding factor.
